A meeting was held recently (on Feb. 15) in Canberra to gather together
stakeholders in the national electronic conveyancing project. Those of you
who were there (and I noted quite a few LIXI members) will be aware that the
meeting’s goal was to put together a National Project Team (NPT) of
industry representatives to help guide the development of the National
Electronic Conveyancing System (NECS). This important step was taken because
it is well understood that the NECS will only work if it has broadly-based
industry support - and this support will in turn be dependent upon the
NECS doing what we as an industry want and need it to do. If you are
interesting in participating in, or contributing to, the NPT there is more
information available on the NECS website at www.necs.gov.au.
From a LIXI perspective some of the critical issues that the NPT will
be well placed to highlight, revolve around integration with the computer
systems of LIXI members. The NECS needs to exchange data that, wherever
possible, use the familiar LIXI vocabulary. This is why LIXI and the National
Electronic Conveyancing Office (NECO) have been working closely together to
define the various electronic messages that the NECS will create and consume.
This work began last year and we have already made excellent progress on the
transactions on the land registry side of the system.
Our attention will shortly be moving to the transactions required for
client-side interactions, i.e. the transactions LIXI users will use to
interact with the NECS. Clearly this is an area where LIXI users can gain
a great deal by participating - both in terms of shaping how the NECS will
work and developing their own staff’s knowledge of the NECS. If you
would like to get involved with this work you can sign up to the NECS/LIXI
Conveyancing Data Standards Working Group on the LIXI website. Group
membership will give you access to review and comment on the evolving
requirements documentation, and ensure that you will receive email
notification of upcoming meetings.
